Anita and Renaldo Kiel Cheng

Anita Cheng received her BA in English from The Colorado College and her
MFA in Dance from the University of Michigan. In 1991, she received a
Fulbright in choreography to complete her Post-Graduate Studies at the
Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has danced for Ann Arbor
Danceworks, Whitley Setrakian & Dancers, and in the works of Betsy Fisher
and Tran T. Thuc Hahn, among others. In 1997, she was recognized with a
New York Emmy award as graphic designer for the series, The City, for
Thirteen/WNET New York. In 1998 and 1999, she received grants from the
Experimental Television Center to realize two dances with video, The
Secret Sharer and Home of the Gesture. And in December 1999, Cheng was
singled out in Dance Magazine¹s article "21 Leaps Into the Twenty-First
Century".

Cheng¹s dance, Daybreak, was selected for performance at the 2000 Eighth
Biennial Art and Technology Symposium at Connecticut College. In 2001,
her dances were presented in group shows at Colorado College, the Merce
Cunningham Studio, the Alvin Ailey Studio and the Joyce Soho as part of
the Downtown Arts Festival in New York City. In July of 2001, she was one
of four emerging choreographers invited to take part in a new lab at
Jacob¹s Pillow Dance Festival that paired choreographers with
compositional fellows at the Tanglewood Music Center. Also in 2001,
Cheng¹s video and DVD installation piece D¹Invenzioni, in collaboration
with artist Ronaldo Kiel, premiered in Sao Paulo and was then invited to
be part of the opening exhibition of the Santandar Cultural Center in
Porto Alegre, Brazil.
