First Name:

Ranging from collaborative documentaries to video art, Norman Cowie's work interrogates the relations of power and domination in contemporary society and seeks to complicate the ways in which meaning and consent are constructed through the media. Cowie's videotapes often use the techniques of documentary, off-air appropriation, and short form sound and text collage. Currently a video producer and a professor of media theory and production, Cowie has been drawn towards media literacy as an activist and pedagogical tool. "Scenes from an Endless War", supported by Finishing Funds in 2002, was recognized by Best Experimental Documentary (tied), Iowa City International Documentary Festival, 2003 Director's Citation, Black Maria Film and Video Festival, 2003 Best Short Film, Melbourne Underground Film Festival, 2003. His work is distributed by Video Data Bank.
